I have been reading more poetry lately. Reading it out loud. Listening to someone else read it out loud to me after dinner.
I like that sometimes it’s not about the words making sense, but about the words making sound. It is about how the body feels after receiving these acoustic waves.
Poetry is also very visual—the structure of the words on the page can be as important as what they mean.
Because so much is said with less, poetry often uses evocative imagery. A whole world is described with a small collection of words.
Mostly, I write really bad poetry, usually during romantic break-ups. Occasionally, I will write a nature poem. And sometimes when I write a recipe, it can feel like a poem. A friend recently shared her kid’s magic spell book with me, and it reminded me of poetry, too.
As you may have guessed, this week’s prompts will encourage you to write some poetry. Be descriptive, have fun, let your imagination run wild, and don’t be afraid to lean into the bizarre.
